Process Breakdown: Modeling
Patch is a game where the player takes control of a small forest spirit named Rupert who must protect his habitat from various environmental hazards. As a 3D artist on the game, I designed, rigged, and animated his character's 3D model.
Modeling
Rupert's final 3D design was modeled very closely after concept art by Leena Felder. I first created a character turnaround sheet, and then imported those images into Maya to use as direct reference while creating his model. I then unwrapped the character as a UV map for texturing.
Rigging and Animation
Once modeling was complete, I created a joint rig for Rupert. Using Autodesk Maya, I painted skin weights onto the model and created three animations which would be played in the game. The Idle animation plays whenever the player is not moving, the run animation plays when the player moves around, and the throw animation plays when the character interacts with the lumberjack NPC. The texture for the character was created by Leena Felder.
